Attend unto my cry; for I am brought very low: deliver me from my persecutors; for they are stronger than I. Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me.

Psalm 142:6-7 (KJV)

The Psalmist cries out not in anger but in the recognition of human powerlessness—brought low, pursued, imprisoned by circumstances beyond individual strength. Today’s news holds many such cries: those trapped by illness and bureaucracy, those freed from captivity, those buried by water, those whose warnings went unheard. The verse does not promise instant rescue or the absence of suffering, but rather speaks to the act of crying out itself, and to a hope that reaches beyond the present moment toward a God who notices those who are very low. In such times, perhaps our first work is simply to acknowledge the cry, to name the suffering, and to ask whether we are adding to the weight or, however quietly, helping to lighten it.

What prompted this

Today's news carries a weight of human suffering—flooding has claimed lives, vulnerable people face deportation while gravely ill, captives are freed after prolonged captivity, and systems meant to protect the young have failed them. Amid these sorrows, there are glimmers of release and homecoming.
