It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV)

When the weight of the world’s suffering presses down—the vulnerable trapped beneath rubble, families torn apart by violence and exploitation, systems that have encoded cruelty across centuries—the impulse to despair makes sense. Yet the prophet does not counsel denial or false cheerfulness. Instead, he locates a thin mercy in the very fact of continued existence, in the possibility of waking to a new day. This is not comfort that erases pain, but an invitation to notice that mercies continue to arrive: the rescuer who digs through rubble, the stranger who extends welcome, the decision made with compassion rather than cruelty. To be faithful in such a day is not to solve the unsolvable, but to tend to what remains possible—to notice where mercy has not yet failed, and to let that small, stubborn fact hold us until tomorrow.

What prompted this

Today's headlines carry the weight of widespread suffering—children lost in collapsed buildings, prisoners exploited by their captors, femicide spreading unchecked, violence escalating across regions, and the echoes of historical injustice embedded in systems meant to protect. Amid these currents of harm, small mercies—a student's kindness, a prosecutor's compassion toward grieving siblings—remind us that witness and care still matter.
