fear and uncertaintylamentvulnerabilitythe limits of human knowledge

But I trusted in thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my God. My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.

Psalm 31:14-15 (KJV)

When the news carries accounts of suffering—sudden loss at sea, the persecution of those already vulnerable, the schemes that prey on the lonely and desperate—we are reminded of how small our mastery truly is. The anxieties of our makers about the systems they have built, the chaos of weather and human cruelty, the exploitation that finds new forms in each generation: these are not problems to be solved by human ingenuity alone. The psalmist offers not a denial of these realities, but a reorientation—a placing of one’s times, one’s circumstances, into hands larger than our own. To trust is not to pretend the world is safe, but to acknowledge that we are not its guardians.

What prompted this

Today's news carries the weight of multiple crises—loss of life at sea, persecution of vulnerable communities, exploitation of the young and unprotected—alongside growing anxiety about technologies we are developing faster than we can understand. The day invites us to sit with what we do not control.
