lamentcare for the vulnerablemercy

A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.

Proverbs 22:3 (KJV)

The news today catalogues a particular kind of suffering: the suffering that might have been prevented. A child left alone on a mountain. Workers in an unstable mine. Vulnerable people caught between borders and policies. A seventeen-year-old girl in what should have been an ordinary day. Proverbs speaks of foresight—the capacity to see danger coming and step back from it—and implicitly asks what we owe to those who cannot foresee, or who have no power to hide themselves. On a day like this, the question is not whether evil exists, but whether we, who do possess the power to see ahead, are using it to protect the simple, the young, the trapped, and the powerless among us.

What prompted this

Today's headlines carry the weight of preventable suffering across the world—children abandoned or harmed, vulnerable populations displaced, workers trapped in dangerous conditions, lives lost in sudden violence and natural disaster.
